Box Spring vs Foundation: Which Does Your Mattress Need?

January 20, 2026 6 min readBy Mattress 4 Less

Confused about whether you need a box spring or a foundation? This guide explains the difference and helps you choose the right support for your mattress.

If you're shopping for a new mattress, you've probably seen both "box springs" and "foundations" mentioned β€” often interchangeably. But they're not the same thing, and choosing the wrong one can void your mattress warranty and shorten its lifespan.

Here's everything you need to know about box springs vs. foundations.

What Is a Box Spring?

A box spring is a wooden frame filled with heavy-duty steel springs, covered in fabric. It's designed to:

  • Absorb shock and reduce wear on your mattress
  • Add height to your bed
  • Work with traditional innerspring mattresses
  • Provide a small amount of "give" that complements innerspring support

Box springs have been the standard mattress foundation for decades, but they're not right for every mattress.

What Is a Foundation?

A foundation (sometimes called a "bunkie board" or "platform base") is a solid or semi-solid flat surface with no springs inside. It's designed to:

  • Provide firm, even support
  • Work with memory foam and hybrid mattresses
  • Prevent sagging in foam mattresses
  • Meet the warranty requirements of most modern mattresses

Foundations are increasingly the standard as memory foam and hybrid mattresses have become more popular.

Key Differences

| Feature | Box Spring | Foundation | |---------|-----------|------------| | Construction | Wood frame + springs | Solid or slatted surface | | Flex | Bouncy, shock-absorbing | Firm, flat | | Best for | Innerspring mattresses | Memory foam, hybrid mattresses | | Modern use | Declining | Standard |

Which Does Your Mattress Need?

Choose a Box Spring If:

  • You have a traditional innerspring mattress
  • Your bed frame requires one (check the frame's design)
  • You want extra height on your bed
  • Your mattress warranty specifically calls for a box spring

Choose a Foundation If:

  • You have a memory foam mattress
  • You have a hybrid mattress
  • You want to prevent sagging
  • Your mattress warranty requires "firm, flat support"
  • You have a platform bed frame

What Happens If You Choose Wrong?

Using a box spring under a memory foam mattress can cause the foam to sag between the springs, voiding the warranty and shortening the mattress's life. Using a foundation under an innerspring mattress may feel too firm and reduce the mattress's bounce.

Do You Need Either?

If you have a platform bed with solid or closely-spaced slats (less than 3" apart), you may not need a box spring or foundation at all. The platform provides the support your mattress needs.
